Scattering from nonlinear acoustic beams
Numerical solutions of the KZK equation are possible for real-world spaces (here, overlaid on an aviary) to visualize the beam pattern produced by an acoustic parametric array. When combined with Acoustic Finite Integration (AFIT) codes, we can study the scattering from any object in the beam path.
A multi-sensor platform for autonomous robotics
Our mobile sensor platform, rMary, includes a thermal infrared camera, Microsoft Kinect, acoustic parametric array, and low-cost radar. Current reseach uses the acoustic and radar backscatter data to classify oncoming vehicles.
Microsoft Kinect for outdoor autonomous robots
The Microsoft Kinect includes a RGB camera, near-IR sensor, and 4-microphone array. Active IR illumination provides a depth-mapped image in indoor environments (left) as well as nighttime outdoor environments (middle) where a RGB image (right) doesn't provide useful information.
Detection of counterfeit electronics using contact ultrasound
An ultrasonic tranducer with a conical acrylic delay line takes pulse-echo measurements of a still-mounted electronic component (left). Signal processing algorithms create a binary image from these waveforms (right), in which features of the component's internal structure, including flaws (red arrow) can be easily seen.
Bayesian parameter estimation in porous materials
The physical properties of a rigid-frame porous material can be determined from the measured acoustic impedance. Here we see the Bayesian probability distribution for three properties of a model material with added noise.
Architectural acoustics design competition
Work done with Jon Botts for the 2009 ASA Student Design Competition. The design scenario was a 400-seat interfaith chapel and community outreach center with associated office space in a tropical location with views of the ocean.
Acoustics of Southeast Asian free reed wind instruments
We used a transmission matrix model to calculate the impedance of reed/pipe combinations from Southeast Asian wind instruments. Comparison of the theoretical and measured impedance and a phase relation allows prediction of the sounding frequency of the reed/pipe combination.
